Just in time for the lazy, hazy, gloriously relaxed days of summer: a whole slew of summertime STEM activities for you! Not only are they summery and STEM-y but all three of these explorations center on a favorite summertime treat: the S’more. Innovative science and technology can be delicious!
Is there a better way to celebrate summer than making some s’mores?
So–while summertime means vacations and swimming, beaches and being lakeside, for some it also means relaxed learning by reading good books, making lots of art, and doing messy STEM projects.
Who doesn’t love the traditional summertime treat of graham cracker, melted chocolate and burnt marshmallow? Or maybe your preference is golden brown? I won’t judge.
Sometimes, though, you just have to push the boundaries of tradition! You need to break out and innovate!
Summertime STEM Challenges
This Memorial Day weekend we decided to explore energy change, solar energy and culinary creativity. I offered the kids three different STEM challenges using s’mores as our inspiration to kick off the summer. All this week I will be sharing our s’more STEM ideas. These activities are easy for an any day activity at home or, with a little up front preparation, you can pull off these explorations on vacation.
Want to see what we did? Up first is a culinary challenge.
Challenge #1: Create A New S’More Recipe
The combination of chocolate, marshmallow and graham is well-loved. But STEM explorations should allow little scientists or engineers to consider different possibilities. We were going for innovation and creativity in this first experiment. Creating a new recipe invites kids (and adults) to question standards, think outside the box and create a unique solution to a problem.
Here are some suggestions for a successful and tasty exploration:
- Accept all combinations of ingredients.
- Limit number of ingredients to be used per s’more (we used 4).
- Consider using the grill so the s’mores are all done at the same time.
- Use a foil cake pan to melt ingredients.
- Provide creative ingredients like different chocolates, fruit, peanut butter, or caramels.
- Roast, taste and enjoy!
Results of the Taste Test
We loved exploring these ooey gooey summertime STEM challenges. The most fun was taste testing! Our top 3 new combos include caramel and chocolate, chocolate with a dash of cinnamon, and peanut butter and chocolate.
