For the beach or Shark Week
The Devil’s Teeth: A True Story of Obsession and Survival Among America’s Great White Sharks by Susan Casey Oh how I loved sharks growing up. There was no Shark Week back then but I did read all the non-fiction books I could get my hands on about these creatures. This is a grown ups version of the National Geographic leveled readers about the most mesmerizing of sharks: the Great White. There is an island off the coast of California, called the Farallon Islands, where sharks gather and so do scientists interested in studying them. The author, Susan Casey, spent time there learning from the people but mostly from the sharks.
Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan Because who doesn’t love this guy? He speaks to parents, makes us laugh and feel better about our parenting which we are most certainly messing up. Confession: I once met him while on vacation and got to catch him live. He and his wife only 2 kids at the time and his little boy danced with my niece at the luau. Kind of a cool “star” encounter.
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate I know, I know. This is a novel for kids but we listened to it on a recent road trip and, oh. So good. None of the children cried but I sobbed as I drove those last few miles listening to the end of the story. If you want a book that is hopeful and profound that you can share with your kids, this is it
For inpiration or remembering
Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne I read this for the first time this year and it was so in tune with who and how we want to parent. Practical and completely do-able, this book should be on your bookshelf so you can re-read it when you need it. This was just the inspiration I was looking for to simplify our household and homeschool.
