While summer is quickly waning, you still have time to get away on a family vacation. Ours, in fact, doesn’t start until this week. I don’t mind time in the car and, with a grateful heart, I have kids that don’t mind either.
That said, there comes a time on all road trips that I can’t play word games or answer 20 questions like “when are we going to be there?” once more. I need less conversation and more quiet.
This is when family friendly audiobooks come to the rescue.

Family Friendly Audiobooks For Long Car Rides
We have enjoyed these books while on our way to and from grandparents, while en route to our vacation destination and as a continuing story while tooling about town.
Some sort of magic happens when an audiobook is on in the car (or, really, at home).
Everyone is quiet save for some reaction to the story.
No one is asking for a different station (like when the radio is on) or to skip to a new song (like a music cd) or when the movie is going to be through so another one can be popped into the DVD.
Audiobooks save my sanity while on the road.
Two more things I notice:
- the youngest to the oldest in the car have a sense of shared story and a conversation can happen that involves everyone.
- since we have been listening to books since they were young, my kids’ attention is stronger for it.
We listen using Audible, OverDrive and CD’s; some books (like Little House) are not available through Audible yet. You can get an Audible membership here and start enjoying books together on the road. Happy Travels!
